EX.: The word so in the second part of the sentence introduces a purpose. You cannot therefore use a comma befor so.
Compare:
Jane and Diva got up early, so they were able to catch the first train.
EX.: Now you can use a comma before so, because the second clause is a result. Compare the verb forms in he second part of each sentence.
